Divergent Series . . . Better Not!

To paraphrase Fat Amy from Perfect Pitch, Sometimes I think I want to recommend the book Divergent to family and friends, but then I’ think. . . hmmm. . . Better Not! The consensus on this trilogy of books, if we are to consider profit sales, it is very positive. However, in my opinion, I think people get carried away with the momentum from the hype of The Hunger Games and submerge themselves into another dystopian story expecting to be rewarded with a great tale. I think that besides the lack of development in the relationship between Tris and Four, this series disappoint in the delivery of the heartbreaking ending of the third book.

The Divergent series has an interesting plot and the characteristics of the story are appealing enough, but what starts as a good novel, quickly descends from bad into worse as the books shift narration in first person from the heroine to her boyfriend on the third book. Personal feelings aside, I have seen a disproportionate difference between the positive reviews of the first and second books, to the third book which was received poorly and has been reviewed negatively by many fans, so I know for a fact that I’m not alone.

The ending of the series broke my heart so painfully that for many, many months I eagerly discouraged everyone that asked from getting involved with this trilogy. The movie Divergent seems to be good and I will probably see it on DVD because the first book is not so bad, but you have been warned. Maybe this is one of those times when being spoiled by the ending will be for the better. For someone like me who likes standard happy endings, I know I wish I had known in advance.

  1. Ah… I know what you mean. I haven’t read the book, but my classmate told me how it ends…and BAM! I was saved from this author’s treachery 🙂
